The Chlorogenic Acid within Green Coffee Beans Extract

You’ve probably heard the talk or read the features of the benefits of pure green coffee beans extract whether it is drank as coffee or taken as a supplement. Its antioxidant and weight loss benefits are mostly derived from the component extracted from it called Chlorogenic Acid.

What is Chlorogenic Acid?

Chlorogenic AcidChlorogenic acid is a natural chemical compound that is a combination of caffeic acid, quinic acid, and an important biosynthetic intermediate from lignin biosynthesis. This compound is a major antioxidant that slows down the release of glucose into the bloodstream after a meal.

Although implied by its name, chlorogenic acids contain no chlorine. The name is derived from the Greek “Chloros” meaning “light green” and “Yenic” which is a Greek suffix meaning “giving rise to.” This is because of the green color produced by the acid when oxidized.

Aside from pure green coffee beans extract, chlorogenic acid is also found in potatoes, bamboo, peaches, sunflower seeds, and prunes, though in smaller amounts. Young bamboo shoots are considered as a healthy vegetable diet in many Asian countries and a good source for antioxidants.

Biological Effects and Benefits

Chlorogenic acid is also known for its antihypertensive effects. It has been medically reported to be a chemical sensitizer responsible for some human respiratory allergies. It still has not been determined why it has great laxative effects when prunes are eaten in large amounts.

Chlorogenic Acid Effects and BenefitsProbably the most well-known study on pure green coffee beans extract was that presented by Dr. Mehmet Oz on his show, the Dr. Oz Show. The 2012 Metabolic and Obesity Study had researchers follow a group of 16 adults who were all obese or overweight. They were all given a green coffee bean extract of chlorogenic acids of 700mg or 1050mg per day for 12 weeks. All 16 adults lost an average of 18 pounds representing 10% of their overall body weight and 4.4% of their overall body fat.

To test this study himself, Dr. Oz and his medical unit conducted their own under the guidance of diet experts like Dr. Caroline Apovian and Kristin Kirkpatrick. This is considered as the show’s biggest project to date.

The show enlisted, this time, 100 women who were aged between 35 to 49, and were all overweight or obese. The women had no medical history of major medical problems like any heart disease or diabetes. Participants were given either a 400mg capsule of chlorogenic acid or a placebo to be taken daily 30 minutes before a meal. Participants were instructed not to change their diet and to keep a food journal.

The Results

After two weeks, all the participants were weighed. Those who took the pure green coffee bean extract lost two pounds while those who took the placebo lost one pound.
